Sometimes people are afraid of what they understand. Many people are apprehensive about anything that requires great sums of money for advancement. I personally have a relative who wanted help with her dyslexia among other problems. They would only help if they received payment of $5,000. In addition, she would need more money for the purification ceremony. She could not afford it because she is a struggling single mother. They refused to help her. This is not an isolated incident. (She sought help at the Alexandria Center.) Can you understand why the average person would be apprehensive? It seems to be more about what can you do for us than what can we do for you? ...money...money...money!!!!!!!

because that is exactly what it is: a study of the mind and how powerful it can be, which i have no problem with but then, it goes on to give no consideration of or, regard for, God. it is a 'religion' of self, which pretty much says it all - not a religion at all. its ideology is cult-like from inception.
there are a lot of self-improvement programs out there (which is all that scientology should reasonably claim to be) yet, scientology is the only one far-fetched, high strung, wild and crazy enough to assert itself as a religion and promise to teach individuals the ability to fulfill all of their own needs. - an preposterous, unhealthy and pompous suggestion.
you asked the question and this is my answer but hey, good luck to you.....
however, i wish you would spend some time really studying why there is so much public angst regarding scientology before you delve further into it.

Maybe because, right or wrong,
1) Most people do not see it as a religion which it claims to be
2) Most people think that is just a tax dodge
3) Most people don't think of L. Ron Hubbard as anything more than a so-so sci-fi writer.
4) Most people don't see Tom Cruise as the messiah.

Oh my god....if you want to help the world you must start with yourself. The illusion : we are a united society. The reality : everyone is a single individual. Each must take care of himself.
It's not egotistic, it's the only way that works.
If Tom Cruise claims to know the history of psychiatry and how it works, it's because he researched it...something actual doctors don't necessarily do. They learn "by the book" in a biased way. They're in it to make money most the time. They're happy to maintain the status quo. They're not after the truth!!!
Evolve. Stop kidding yourselves.
I'm not part of scientology in any way, but I research alot of crucial info and I know the truth when I hear it.

People who "bash" scientology very often are quite familiar with enough of its practices or beliefs to be able to form a very educated opinion about it.
If you think well of it that's your business, and you shouldn't care if the rest of the world thinks it bunk.

One thing that frightens me is when 'adherents' like Tom Cruise try to lecture others on medical matters. He is an actor, only an actor...and he should know his place. This sort of thing alarms and concerns me.
