I remember an old black and white movie where a man is getting ready to be hung from a bridge. He closes his eyes and when is dropped he somehow escapes from his noose and falls into the river below. He swims away and runs to find his wife/lover. However it gets a little strange and when he finally falls into her arms we realize he dreamt it all in a few seconds and he falls off the bridge to his death by hanging.

I think it might have been from the Twilight Zone perhaps. Perhaps not.

You're remembering a short film, "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", based on a story set during the Civil War by American writer Ambrose Bierce. It was one of the few stories shown on Rod Serling's original "Twilight Zone" series that wasn't made specifically for the series.
There may be a listing of it on the Internet Movie Data Base, since they sometimes list notable short films. If I remember correctly, it was made in France.
