What would be the benefits, direct or indirect, for GM?

there would be no benifit look what its done to there current owner only benifit might be its stays #1 usa auto maker a few more years

I don't think GM could afford to buy Chrysler right now. They are in trouble and losing money fast.

No they should not buy them out but should invest in them and help them to reorganize to keep Chrysler going, it's got good products and lousy management, we want to keep the big three here in America and keep our heritage.
