Alienware is the best. It is made for gaming and comes with high end hardware. So it can do everything else as well. IBM and Gateways are good, but nothing campares to the superior Alienware Laptops.

I have both a Gateway and an HP. The Gatway is about 15 months old and has a beautiful screen. The downside is that it is always breaking down, has been serviced four times and I am ready to throw it out. The HP is about 2 years old and actually a better machine than the gateway. I even dropped it off my desk and it still works fine. I did drop a glass on the keyboard and had to have that repaired. Although this was an inexpensive fix. The screen is not as nice as the Gateway though. I use the Gateway for home and the HP for work. The HP is cheaper overall although I did get the Gateway for a good price also. Consumer Reports said Toshiba was the best and I wish I would have paid the extra $200 and bought that.

I've used a few Dell's in tough industrial environments, and they've always served me well. I also had a Gateway, which was decent, but like many new computers, it didn't have a real COM port, and the USB dongles don't always meet your needs. I had an HP desktop once, and I wasn't pleased with it. The motherboard died two months after the warranty expired, and I found a ton of blogs from people with the exact same experience. No comment on Sony or Mac.

HP- I have owned 2 HP Desktops and 1 HP Laptop and I have never had any problems with any of them. The Laptop is a year old and I've never had any problems with it and I use it for hours daily. One desktop I have owned for 7 years and it's never had to be fixed or anything. The other desktop is new and has been running great. HP is the new computer powerhouse...they are making great products are great prices. Dells are bad...my bf's computer is a dell and the hard drive has crashed FOUR TIMES. And that was just one computer. I have 3 HP's and not once has any of them crashed.

There is no "best" brand. It will depend on what you are most comfortable with.

If you like the Mac OS, you definitely looking at an Apple.

Otherwise, you need to look at features, specs, etc., and the price you are willing to pay.

I have supported several in a corporate environment, and personally I prefer the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad. I have had a few personally and found them to be dependable. The only downside would be that they are more expensive than some of the other brands.

I recommend Dell laptops. They have great deals, coupons, and are quite reliable if you take care of them. Get a good anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application and run them to keep your machine free from problems and running fast.

I have 2 dell laptops, one is over 5 years old and still ticking. If I needed another, I would get a Dell in a second.

Dell has a 20% off $999 laptop coupon at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good Luck.

It would have to be Apple. Their Macs are good for their simplicity and productivity. You can make a home movie or DVD, make your own music or podcast, listen to music, and more. It also includes a built-in camera and microphone. They never get viruses.

The only downside of Macs is that they are a bit expensive, but it's worth it's features.
