Can I add a memory board of a different capacity?

I have a Dell 2400 (1-GB ram capable) with 256MB of DDR SDRAM memory. I bought a 512MB memory board. Can I plug that into the empty DIMM slot and leave the 256MB board in place, or do both slots have to have the samememory capacity?

yes you can, as long as they are the same type of ram (memory)
said if your ram is using PC2700, then you would need to use the same PC2700, but not PC3400 or anything else. for more details, go to crucial.com for deeper explaination'

First the maximum memory is 512 Mb memory module for each slot.

256MB PC-2700 DDR memory (one module)

At the Dell site, it seems to indicate you have 2 Gb capacity. That is 1 Gb memory module in each slot. You better check again, with whoever said you only have 1 Gb max memory. Crucial.com and Dell seem to indicate of 2 Gb of memory now.

Since you already bought it see if you can return it and get the 1Gb if you have the money to buy the module.
