the hyundia's and kia's have become pretty decent cars if you have 15k to spend you should visit either of these dealers and find out how far your money goes, a new honda civic will be about this price also and while the korean cars beat honda's warranty honda's have proven [given proper care] to last just about forever. toyota corolla's last and should be on your short list as well. the latest and greatest from the [big three] are basically disappointments with some redeeming aspects but are unrefined for their price.

I have an '01 Ford Focus ZX3 hatchback, it's been great. No mechanical problems, great mileage, comfortable (plenty of head room!), and it handles the corners well. Not over-powered, but more than enough to keep up with traffic without really trying. Small enough to get around easily in the city, large enough to carry 5 people (if the people in the back are on good terms with each other), and the trunk is bigger than it looks. Also, the rear seats can be laid flat if you need to carry something large. You can probably bet one for under $10k - new ones are close to $15k.

I love my Scion xA. They start at about $12,500, and are made by Toyota (under the Scion brand). They have the same frame and engine as the Toyota Echo, so they're made well. I have had mine since 04 and had no problems. They're easily customized online or at the dealer. I'm not sure if they're sold out of the US.

Toyotas run forever and the Camry is probably the best car for your dollar.
