Macs are not that good, they tend to need to get fixed often. XP has been out for a while and are running very well with very few glitches. Vista is new and can have bugs in them that need to be worked out. Dells tend to have a lot of issues and crash often, my bf's Dell computer had the hard drive crash 4 times. I have always had HP and they have never crashed nor given me a problem. I have an HP DV5135 Laptop and it has XP Media Center Edition which is good for gaming and for casual use.
I would get HP Windows XP Media Center Edition with at least 1 GB RAM and a 100 GB Hard Drive. With these configurations, ocne Vista is running better and has gotten the bugs out you can upgrade.

Dell is a great company for laptops. They have great deals and coupons to keep those costs down. If you take care of that computer with a anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application, it will last you a long time.
I have 2 dell laptops and 1 is over 5 years old. It still does the job as intended and if I needed a new laptop I would get another Dell.
For your needs, if you are gaming, go with the XPS systems. They are pricey, but if you want to run PC games on any laptop, you are going to pay for it. For casual use, any of the e1705 or e1505s are good. The only difference is if you wanted a larger screen.
Dell has a 20% off $999 inspiron coupon at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html to help you save on that purchase.
Good Luck.

Alienware makes the best computers and laptops for gaming 2nd to none and it can do everything else too. Vista is the way to go too.

HP/Compaq with high resolution and a d dock station for better sounds and multi input ports. Find bargain at auctions w/o sales fee.

you should just get a macbook pro, mac's don't give you any trouble they are always secure, nice graphics, very fast processors but if you don't like messing around with macs, i recommend that you get an hp they are very durable and tend not to give you as much problems as the other manufacturers

Go on line and look up what the Consumer book says for laptops, they know best everyone else is going to tell you their favorite. The consumer knows best and it also depends on what you want and need.
