In normal course, repelling insects is at best a effort in futility,as they are more adapted to evade our efforts at repelling them.
A relatively different approach for this problem is
making use of sound.
This entails creating very high frequency sound waves which create a destructive interference wave pattern which is not amenable for insects& hence makes them aviod the area arond the waves generated.
In creation of this sound frequency a set of apparatus have to be put to use which emit this
sound waves.
the effects of this have not been 100% certified to be effective & and is also known to create in intrfernce in some electornic equipments.
these compact equipment are availabe at electronic stores & with those dealing in pest control .
Do however check the frequency of sound emitted to know the level of inteference it can create fr yur other equipment at home.

Not sure if this is what you're referring to or asking for, but I have these little plug-in gizmos made by Sunbeam that are supposed to repel a wide variety of insects up to a range of 25'+/-, and, knock-on-wood, so far they've worked pretty well for 5 years or so.. Believe they operate on the UHF frequency(don't quote me on that) and don't seem to bother my pets.. Cost around $20 for 3 of them 5 years ago.. Have seen similar by other manufacturers.. Hope this helps..

Dunno about sound based. You should try something called a Thermacell - it's got a little wafer that it heats up that produces some kind of smell. I was surprised, it actually gives you a little zone of protection.
