She hasn't had her periods since june 2006! when she came off the oill to give her body a break! She doesn't know that i know about the laxatives problem as she's kept it really private. But i think she's hurting herself! and now her friend is doing it to! What are the long term implications of this and how can i help but by being subtle?

She is anorexic and needs to get help for this eating disorder. The long term effects are heart problems, electrolyte imbalance and even death if she is not careful. The best thing you can do is report what you know to her parents so they can try to help her. Don't worry about her getting mad or finding out that you are the one who said something as it is better to say something then for her to die because of the eating disorder.

Your body stops menstruating when it's undergoing extreme stress. This is because it's conserving it's energy to survive--and doesn't have enough energy to bear a child. So your body stops the cycle that it needs to go through to be able to be pregnant. When girls stop menstruating, it causes serious problems for their long term health---osteoperosis, heart problems, etc.

Your cousin has a serious problem and needs help. She may have anorexia or a disorder called "exercise bulimia" where she exercises until she feels she's balanced out the amount of calories she's eaten in a day. She may feel the laxatives are helping.

These are both disorders that cause people to be very private and to be in denial. Girls with eating disorders are so good at lying to themselves and to others that if you confront her on her own, chances are good she will lie to you out of habit.

I'd suggest you share your fears with her parents or with your parents. She needs serious medical help, the kind that only a nutritionist, counselor, and doctor can provide. You cannot get her out of this alone.

Your cousin is hurting herself, and what she's doing can kill her. She seems to meet the description of anorexia.

Don't talk to her about it. But do talk to your uncle and aunt. Tell them what you know (laxatives and no period) and what you suspect. Do some research first, but stick to the medical sites and the government sites for your information. I'm giving you a couple of places to start. That way, you can give your aunt and uncle information that will help them to see that their daughter is in serious, serious trouble, and that there is help available. Remind them that you're doing this because you care and you don't want to lose your cousin or for them to lose their daughter.

For your periods to start you need to have a certain amount/percent of body fat. You need to let her know if she continues with the laxatives, she is going to loose control over her bowels

She has a serious problem! Please, sit her down and ask her if she needs to talk. How old is she and can you tell her parents? She needs to see a doctor, this is life or death. Please, don't wait!
