Russia is part of both Asia and Europe. The reason Eurasia is divided into Europe (West) and Asia (East) is that both of these landmasses have significantly different social norms, cultures, mentalities, histories, etc. Since Russia is such a large country (largest in the world), it has had contact with both and has traits of both the Western world and the Eastern world. Therefore, Russia is in both Asia and Europe. I myself have lived in both parts: in the West (Moscow) and the East (Siberia). While Moscow is a very European city, Ust'-Kamenogorsk (in Siberia) reminded me more of China.
The border between the Asian and European part of Russia is considered the Ural Mountains.

The answer is : Both. Russia is a huge country, and the European portion of the country (usually divided at the Ural Mountains) is much smaller than the landmass that is in Asia, north of Kazakstan, Mongolia and Manchuria, and all the way to Vladivostok, north of Japan. .

when i was a kid learning such things, russia was another name for the USSR, with the capitol of Moscow. and covered the northern half of both haves of the single Urasian continent, which for reasons known only to those who decided at some time in antiquity to call two contintenents, has no real dividing ocean, only rivers and other country lines that someone decided made it two continents. so i assume now that the old USSR is broken back up into several countries, which continent the new one called russia resides on is a judgment call, depending on what portion of the old russia it encompasses, and what geographical or other feature the minds that decide such things chose to designate as the boundaries between the supposed two continents in this new revised but still single Eurasian continent.

if u know what a eurasian country is, then this will be easy to explain. russia itself is a eurasian country today (meaning they share both asia and europe) some argue that it all belongs to europe, some say it all belongs to asia. in truth they share.
