I suppose. He was born and grew up about two blocks from where I'm sitting. If you read his biography carefully, you'll find that he was very sympathetic to the people of the South, and was in fact the headmaster of a southern school. However, he also knew that if the south was not completely, utterly deprived of any means of raising another rebellion, guerrilla war would rage for years and ultimately destroy the land and the people there.
It was unfortunate that he refused to run for President. We could have used him.
It should also be noted that, statues and the museum aside, he was and is not popular back here in his home town, which though in the North was a hotbed of southern sympathizers.
