All time: Metallica
Based on recent albums: Lamb of God, or maybe Chimaira.
As far as live shows go, that's obvious: GWAR, followed by Hatebreed.
Individual metal figure: probably the lyricist of Nile; or the exciting Phil Anselmo. Either way, the lyrics are better than most other bands.

I'll show my age...

Led Zeppelin. Go out and rent/buy the DVD's, The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won. You will never see anything like that in a live performance for as long as you live. I know, I have been to a lot of concerts.
As for anyone who says the Stones are the greatest, I can't believe they are still around. Mediocre at best.

Dear gods, half of those bands above aren't heavy metal at all!!!

If you're asking for a strictly HEAVY metal band, then either Dream Evil or Sabaton for me, although Iron Maiden are great also.

If you're asking for metal in general, then bands like Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian, Freedom Call, Nocturnal Rites...
