Who knows what goes through these little brains?
I have two Yorkies and my female is constantly following me around outside and tasting my container gardens! The other day she was digging out my Spice garden! My Male couldn't care less! With her, I think it's more out of curiosity as she gets anxious when I'm planting things! Apparently Terriers are the worst for digging (The word terrier comes from Terra - meaning earth).
Instead of screaming - Try to redirect digging - If you've got the room, give your dog a "dig-zone". Plant a container of mint and hardy plants like lillies, that can handle some trampling. Place large boulders or dividers around areas. Don't let your dog out without your supervision and give her plenty of exercise so that she doesn't feel she has to exercise herself by ripping apart your planters. Place special and toxic plants in raised planters that she can't reach.
Some people will say that your dog may have a nutritional deficiency. I've got a good Veterinarian friend and he says that sometimes Cat's will do this when they suffer from anemia (not so common in Dogs). He thinks it's just more "behavioral", especially if the dog is in good health and is fed a healthy diet!
Who says a Dog has to be smart - All the time? haha!

Hopefully this works for you as well as it did for me. Normally an animal will sniff before digging , so if you sprinkle a small amount of pepper around the base of the plant the animal will get a surprise when it sniffs and usually decides to look for something else to do.
