I think everyone is trying to tell you that Eddie Van Halen is a tough place to go for a beginner, but, it is important to learn stuff that makes you want to pick up your guitar.
I would stay away from any of his guitar solos, but have fun with his rhythm stuff. A personal fav is the comp to "Hot for Teacher", but go with whatever you like.
Learning from tab with the recording is a good way to go, but a good guitar teacher is the best way because they will see things in your technique that will keep you from developing bad habits. Also, things sometimes sound better to your own ears as you are "rockin" then they come across to other people, so if you don't have a good teacher, learn a song, and play it for a friend so you get a swecond opinion on how things sound.

Most of all, just have fun! And remember, the better you get, the more fun it becomes...

You are kidding right? Beginner? Van Halen? It's great that you are learning to play guitar but you should probably start with something a little easier. Good luck, rock on!!

Us old folk will tell you until you're old, Van Halen rules. Pretty Woman will get you back to the basics, with no offense to Roy Orbison.
