On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray.

James Earl Ray was convicted based on a confession that he attempted to withdraw during his trial. There are a host of conspiracy theories (much as Kennedy) but none proven out

James Earl Ray was convicted, but he later tried to convince the court that he was not guilty. He died in 1998.
