Because the earth's period of rotation around the sun is a little OVER 365 days, -- hence a leap year every 4 years, and a fluctuation of the dates of the equinoxes and solstices.

It is called the "precession of the equinoxes." One complete precession takes 25,800 years. It is caused chiefly by the gravitational effects of the sun and the moon on the oblate spheroidal shaped Earth.
