Utilizing USB 2.0 you should see very little, if any difference in read/write speed. A few hits from what I see in the shop however.

A: Unless you have to have a smaller drive go with the full sized externals vs the small ones as the full size uses a 3.5 hard drive and the smaller ones utilize a 2.5 hard drive which on average I have seen fail due to being more senstative to damage from rapid movement and jarring. (Note: some of the vendors however have shock protection in the laptop drives which supposedly can take a good bit of force when the drive is not powered).

B: External hard drives have been notorious in the past with having USB connectivity issues as I have seen several drives come into the shop due to USB failure.

C: Any real important data: IE: taxes, documents, pictures, etc should be backed up to optical disk vs a hard drive. Nothing is sadder than having a client who lost an entire photo album due to mechanical drive failure, especially when it on average runs 1,300 - 1,500 dollars for a recovery from On-Track.

Finally, in my opinion I would buy either Western Digital or Seagate. I cannot remember Seagate's warrenty on their externals, however their 3.5 internals had a 5 year manufacturers warrenty which is two years longer than any of the other major competors.

one thing that everyone needs to know about an external hard drive, or about backing up to cds: you never backup your programs. you only backup your files. 100 gigs is massive. is your hard drive that large? do you really need that much file space?

another thing all should know: be sure to read all KB (knowledge base) articles about backup at microsoft. windows home edition does not have its own backup utility, but pro does. so if you have home edition, go to microsoft, because there is a KB article on how to back up your files.

another idea is to get a usb flash drive to back up only your most important files, as well as your wireless configuration, just in case you are wireless. else, if you lose the configuration, you have to start from scratch and set it up manually. you will then really need a good tech at the company that made the router.

it does work as well as your internal hard drive, but you need to know that first, you should do a disk cleanup, delete temporary cookies, delete temporary files, do a defrag, before you do a backup.

then know that after you have done a complete backup, you will want to read up on the differentials, the incrementals, the copies, etc. there are differences to each type of backup. again, ms is your best source.

occasionally, i reformat my external hard drive and do a full backup again.

one thing i find helpful is to keep cd backups of all my picture files, even though they are on my external hard drive. you never know...

best to you!

The video card is the main imporant component of the equation. Any modern-day computing gadget made this year or maybe final will play the Sims 2 nice, its the video you will possibly be able to desire to observe out for. except its a "gaming" detailed computing gadget, the photos will in all probability lag no remember how plenty RAM or processor it has. That computing gadget sounds like it ought to play them on a modest photos putting, yet no longer grew to become all the way up. And ignore approximately finished nightlife golf equipment lol additionally, whilst you're paying for a computing gadget, constantly purchase the backside obtainable perplexing force and RAM. They mark up the advancements 3 hundred%, you are able to improve that stuff your self with 5 minutes and a screw motive force. the sole issues you cant improve after purchase is the demonstrate and video card. do no longer pad Micheal Dells wallet! do your homework!

It can work just as good as a internal hard drive...

Also if you don't care about portability then I would check out this 250GB hard drive for only $100...far low from competitors but is kinda big:

it works just as well, but it might get damaged more easily, since its outside the notebook....
still, external HDs are better and in demand, which is why they are more expensive than internal drives
