Start out slow and work up to handling him more and more each day. Since he is only 3 weeks old, he is probably still building up his immune system. Just take is slowly and it should be okay.

Raised a variety of rabbits with my children. Despite lying on their backs, having toenails painted and dressed in doll clothes, none of our rabbits died from constant handling.

As long as it is not scared, it will be fine being held. Bunnies can actually get so scared that their bodies go into shock and they die.

Rabbits are very timid creatures.
I mean VERY timid.
They can die of heart attacks because of fear very easily.
The littlest thing can scare them literaly to death.
So I would say your uncle maybe be right on this one.

As long as you're gentle it's fine.
The more you handle the bunny the friendlier she will be.
