a real contraction hurts like hell! you'll know it when you feel it. if you have to wonder whether you just had a contraction or not, more than likely that wasn't it. a contraction can stop you in your tracks and silence you. no one will be able to describe the true feeling of a contraction to you. that pain...you'll know. trust me you'll know. good luck. and strongly consider an epidural.

Braxton hicks will be irregular, and at 40 weeks you're going to be less with braxton hicks and more with the real deal.
Contractions feel like REALLY bad cramping and they come in even intervals. Try to stay at home until they get REALLY bad or until your water breaks. Doctors will often send you home if you're only dialated a few cm.
After you're past 4 cm, you'll KNOW you're in labor. You'll either want an epidural or to rip someone's groin out for doing this to you! Thankfully it doesn't last TOO long!

A REAL contraction feels like your lower abdomen is contracting and then going to explode. You will not be able to walk in an upright position and you won't be able to talk think or anything else. I had bad braxton hicks, and when the real thing hit I couldn't even function.

i just had my baby on the 6th. i had braxton hicks throughout my hole pregnancy and honestly the only way i knew the difference between them and real contractions (pain wise) was that they became regular and didnt go away... then when i went to the hospital they said it was the start of labor... i had to stay for a different reason, because my contractions were so mild they were gonna send me hole, but they seen the fluid was low and induced me.... but the contractions after they break your water, are the most painful things in the world, i thought that they would be harsher period cramps, oh lord no, they were not. but its a little different for everyone you know. good luck though. just keep track of them, you never know, if i wouldnt have been keeping track of mine i never would have seen that they were regular.

I had braxton hicks from about 16 weeks, makes your tummy hard as a rock. Real contractions felt like bad period cramps, and really low.

Every women is different, but with most they really hurt. They are more like a dull cramping, then after your water breaks they greatly intensify. And I thought since we are on the subject of having babies, I would like to add that labor is really painful, BUT, after the baby comes out, all the pain just stops. It is amazing. Like I said though, every women is different, and I wish you all the luck with your new coming baby and congratulations!!!

For me, the contractions felt like the cramping you get when having a period, only stronger. Quite sharp, but manageable if you concentrate on your breathing : maybe you won't need pain relief or stitches like me!! Good luck. Relax.

It feels like all your stomach muscles tightening up all at once. and maybe you will experience some pain in your back. Start counting the time between them and if they are coming closer and closer together then your probably in labor.

it feels unbearable and you wont be able to listen to your partner talk, or if your being drivien to the hospital every little bump will hurt. The contractions are the most painful thing you can remember feeling in your life, when your having one you'll think you wont livbe to see your baby come out....
