The celebrities of Hollywood can be considered the Royals of the United States. People follow their every move and look up to them to determine fashion, style and class. If a celebrity is seen with some product no one has ever heard of, you can bet that within a month people will be scooping them up off of store shelves. They have to have one just like the celebrity. Society as a culture is in the act of stereotyping, and nowhere is this more prominent than Hollywood. Female stars are forced to have a perfect celebrity appearance, and this can have detrimental effects.

Criticism by the media can be the worst enemy of a young pop starlet, as they demand their celebrity appearance looks perfect. From their body to their boobs to their wardrobe, nothing can look bad. Your boobs have to look perfect, so you get a boob job. Your face doesn't look perfect, so you get a face lift or nose or lip job. You're not as skinny as the other actresses in the tabloid, so you must adhere to a strict diet and exercise excessively. All of this is not healthy, but stars feel it is important to make themselves look great and maintain their celebrity appearance. No one wants to hire someone who doesn't look perfect.

Part of what makes criticism by the media difficult is how beaten to death an incident or bad dress worn to a fashion show can become. A variety of media from news to entertainment specials to comedy shows all provide clips of a celebrity appearance gone bad, criticizing what went wrong and ridiculing the person for it. These clips are played over and over until the general public has become sick of watching them. However, these clips aren't dead yet. When shows look into previous star problems or do features on the star they're apt to make a reappearance. Basically, the star will never live them down. Another hindrance on this front is the Internet. With its easy access to post information, video can be played over and over again, and then average people sitting in the comfort of their homes can use blogs and forums to rip on the star's celebrity appearance some more.

All of this criticism over and over again can have damaging effects on a celebrity. Many young, high-profile female celebrities such as Mary Kate Olsen have developed eating disorders due to this constant pressure to be thin and perfect. Drug problems are also an issue as actresses and models, such as Kate Moss, turn to drugs and other methods of starving off hunger. Often by the time celebrities realize they have a problem, they are afraid to seek help due to the criticism they're going to receive for showing they have weaknesses and are not perfect. Admitting you have an eating disorder or drug problem is difficult enough without everybody criticizing you and jumping down your throat for it.

In order for celebrities to be able to do their job and thrive in the public spotlight, they definitely must be comfortable in their own skin and with their celebrity appearance. Actresses and models who take a stand against the demands and act of stereotyping in society are giving young girls new role models to look up to. As the American royals, they should definitely be setting a good example
