As a gay man I observe this a lot with "my people," so to speak. Of course, smoking is more common than the drugs, and I know that a lot of heteros do it too. But why do so many gays do these things. It's almost as if they don't care about themselves. Maybe it's just that too many gay men focus on the "party culture."

because they have mental problems....i think thaT cigrettes and drugs are the least of there wories.....these people are mentally ill... these people go to 'clubs" where it is pitch black dark and guys are randomly having sex with guys they cant even see and dont even know ....some as many as 25 different ones a night and some more! now you tell me how many straight people u see behaving this way....and they wonder why society does not accept their life style....i can tell u why its because they are behaving no different than animals!!! anyone who behaves this way does not deserve to be treated any different from an animal either.....they obviously have some kind of mental problem cause u dont see normal people behaving this way!! i think if yu are worried about the ciggarettes and drugs u need to wake up and be worried about somethin more important like realizing that u chose this lifestyle and u need to get a grip as well as your other "people"......maybe if yall acted like normal human beings instead of people with no morals and standards society might be a little more accepting

Maybe you just think that more gay guys smoke and do drugs than straight guys because that is who you are around the most. From my experience a big percentage of the straight guys smoke and do drugs too! That's why this girl is not dating, I don't think sexual preference has anything to do with it.

sometimes it is the 'party culture' thing. but since many don't live in gay communities when they go their they get a bit wild. they are at home, they are free. they might take it to far.

also after years of abuse from heteros why not use mind-altering substances? why not block out the pain? why care?

also many people have internalized homophobia- basiclly they are told being gay is wrong and start to believe it. they can't date or have sex with drugs to lower their inhibitions. some stop sexual activity (even kissing) because they get so ill they vomit. drugs help them be gay without feeling bad about it-until the next day when the drugs go away

Unfortunately, what you're speaking of is very common in the homosexual lifestyle. I could be wrong, but I think alot of people caught up in this lifestyle are simply addicted people addicted to many things one of them being sex with other men to which they were introduced at a young age. Now there's the occasional person who is not but that is not what I understand is the norm for the culture. There are some - not alot - but some who actually turn away from the lifestyle entirely and go on to live heterosexual lives. Some are called to change, and not all believe it's a genetic thing. There's a fringe who are totally devoted to the homosexual lifestyle but find the self control to stick to one partner, avoid drugs and that's the image that the media tries to promote but it's not the norm.

Tim,
My sis is gay, and Iknow from her that it's sometimes hard to meet other gays...........maybe the whole "gay bar" scene demands smoking? I've honestly never been to a gay bar but have had MANY close to best-friends who are male and gay and it seems that now, looking back, most of them did smoke.
I think it may just be part of the "trying to fit in" culture from the gay bars. As more and more bars disallow smoking you may see a decline in the gay community, as well.

I think it is the stress of gay culture and the negatives of general society. I associated smoking with drinking. Which I did in bars. Where I went to meet men.
When I quit smoking I quit drinking. Now, I meet a healthier bunch of men.

I don't know either...but as a non smoker and non drug user I really notice it too. There was a big campaign on recently in Vancouver called "proud to quit" or something like that.

Nah. Smart people tend to smoke. That's all. Einstein smoked, and them Greeks were pretty smart dudes too, if a bit too gay for my taste. Keep on not breedin', you have my ultimate respect. "Your people" might just save the world. And that's all I have to say about that. I miss lighting up my fags. Hmmm . . . there IS a connection. Interesting . . .

Gay life = single life. They don't have children to take care of, so they spend money and time on those addicted stuff.
