even though at times i have argued with dell, i say, go to THEM.
or else, for graphics, go to APPLE / MACINTOSH.
as to a laptop, i hope you will believe this: my very first pc was a laptop. i only showed it one time to an associate. then it sat on my desk in my office until it was out of date. think about that.
well, if you get a laptop, you can always buy a wireless keyboard so that you do not get wrist strain associated with laptop keyboards.
what i liked when i wanted to get a newly built laptop via dell was that you can get a lowjack chip in it! yes! gee, if you spend over 4 grand for a box, you might as well be able to call lowjack if you notice that someone walked off with it when you were not looking at the airport! they will find it immediately. it is way cool.
i'd also ask for the sturdiest case available, one that has had drop and crash tests, just in case.
i'd get an extended hardware warranty too. it depends on your knowledge whether or not you want software support. for me, i know more than they do.
hope this helps you!!!

Well if your into Graphic design and plan on making a MMORPG then you want the best of the Laptops. Alienware makes all the other look like little kids. I am a Game Designer and know that my school specifically bought Alienware, they are made for gaming and making games and anything else for that matter. Try rendering a 3D object on a dell when using 3d Max, it can barely do it and takes along time.

If you are serious about your goals and needs, go with the Dell XPS series. They are excellent machines that will fit your graphic design needs perfectly. Make sure you load up on RAM (2GB min), a large hard drive, and a great video card. Get these things and you cannot go wrong.
Dell has some great deals and coupons available at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html including a 20% off $999 laptop coupon.
Good Luck.

If you got the cash, then go customize an HP dv9040. Make sure you ask for a top of the line graphic card, Intel Duo 2, at least 120 GB hard-drive but the more the better. It should come with a free Windows Vista. Good luck in that career!

I would reccomend a Dell XPS laptop if you have the cash, but you can build a computer in a small case. They are about 10" wide, 2' long, and 3" tall, and can be moved. If you are intereasted, go to www.newegg.com, then click 'Computer Cases and External Enclosers'>'ATX computer cases'>MicroATX desktop. If you truely must a laptop (which is just as good), then get a dell. Dont get a gateway...never a gateway...
