Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco.
Let's see them try to make a movie out of that one!

Try "Children of the Alley" by Naguib Mahfouz
It has over 250 pages, is not a movie, and is a REALLY easy read.
The author is REALLY cool too. He's Muslim but was shunned by his fellow Muslims because of this book--it's an allegory of Islam and Christianity.

Also, the Diaries of John Rabe is a good read.

It's about the Rape of Nanking, an event that took place in the late 1930s when Japan invaded China and slaughtered millions upon millions of people. No one heard about it until Iris Chang picked it up, but John Rabe was a Nazi hero in Nanking, China. He saved thousands of women from being brutally raped. A really good read.
