please take the time to read all this. me and my buddies bought a 83 chevy truck that were gonna use for parts. we tried to start it by just puttin some gas in and that didnt work, so we put some starter fluid in the carburator then some gas, and it runs on that for a couple seconds and then dies, we had it runnin and then sprayin every 2 seconds to keep it runnin. with the fluid, it runs perfect and takes full rev then without it, it dies. we think its the fuel pump, because I have a 75 and it starts up in this weather. (it is about 10 degrees here with below zero chill factor)

I own a shop, and have dealt with Chevy's for years. How we test for bad fuel delivery system is with a spray can just like you are doing. I think your "83" may have a mechanical fuel pump on it? Could be bad, froze up, leaking hose, plugged fuel filter, and of all things it could be out of gas. If pump isn't working, also check the rod that runs the pump. Spraying every 2 seconds can get you killed man!!! If it backfires through the intake while you are spraying watch your @ss. I'm sure you wouldn't do that, but on here we must assume people doesn't know anything. Take fuel line loose and turn it over to see if it has fuel, if not, then find out why, and you have solved your problem. Hint: A vehicle that has sit idle for a long time without fuel in the tank, builds up mositure inside the tank, and causes all kinds of problems.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

Well first you should look into the carburetor and work the throttle to see if it is getting any gas there. If not, you need to be certain there is enough gas in the tank. Don't just trust the guage. If it has gas in the tank you need to disconnect the fuel line at the carb and have someone crank the engine while you CAREFULLY watch for gas coming from the line. Yell as soon as you see gas to avoid danger. If gas comes out the carb is clogged, repair it. If gas does not come out, change the filter so you are working your way back to the gas tank. If the new filter doesn't fix it you need to check the fuel pump. I think the pump is attached to the engine so you can connect a small can of gas with a hose to the pump and attempt to start the engine. If it will start and run the pump is good. If not, replace the pump. If the pump is good, you are not getting fuel from the tank. Check all the fuel lines for kinks or for damage that might have crushed them. Next you will need to open the tank and check the pick up to see if it is clogged with debris. Be careful! Gas fumes are dangerous. A neighbor of mine got blasted right through his garage door when gas fumes ignited on him. Luckily it was winter and he landed in a snowbank to put out the flames.

Yes you have a bad fuel pump. Here is how to find out.
Remove the fuel line running to the carb. Bow crank the car. Does fuel come out???.
If it does then the float inside the carb is stuck and not allowing the gas to get into the carb.
IF there is no fuel comming from the line after you removed it the yes it is the fuel pump.

If it has been sitting for a long time with old gas in the tank, it has turned to "varnish" and it won't run for crap.
This means the carb is gummed up also. It's easy enough to check for fuel flow, but disable engine so it won't start.
I suggest draining the tank

sounds like a fuel issue ;pump, filter, vent, kinked line, not enough gas. The tank has a filter screen on it that can get pretty clogged.
"ether" by the way

It would be the fuel pump or a clogged filter.
