Wifey and I are going to San Diego next month on a trip. We've gone over the border at Brownsville TX and also into Progresso. We're thinking about walking over the border into Tijuana. My neighbor said it's pretty dangerous these days. I know the best answer is use common sense and stay around the rest of the american tourists, but is it really that bad? Also, besides sea world and the zoo, what else is fun to do in San Diego in March?

Tijuana is not bad at all. Sure, it may not look as nice as other towns, but it is a border town. Go during the day and you should not have any problems finding what you want. Walking over takes you to lots of shops and restaurants. San Diego has great beaches (mission beach, pacific beach, La Jolla cove, Coronado) La Jolla cove offers great snorkeling, and kayaking, it has rodeo style shopping. Balboa Park located in the heart of San Diego has lots of museums and galleries. While Downtown offers hundreds of bars and restaurants.

I had stayed in San Diego for 2 months last year. The advice of everybody living there, stay out of Tijuana. I had stayed in National City x 1month and my friend was snatched infront of her husband. They had parked their car at Ralphs and came back with the windows broken. This is less than 30 minutes from the border.

San Diego is so widespread that you cant appreciate it at once. I bought 2 maps before going there but they are incomplete. I bought a 3rd one, more complete, but needs a magnifying lens to be able to visualize it.

I had appreciated San Diego when I took a ride of the trolley. Ride all cars. There are bus stations at most of the stations. Try going down and explore some places. Be careful when parking your car!

Definitely going to San Diego is always synonymous with going to the Sea World, San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. See their websites if there is a discount when you go to the 3. I had been to the 2 only. In going to the San Diego Zoo be sure to go early since there are scheduled shows. Dont forget to bring sunglasses, hats or umbrella. You will have to do a lot of walking. In San Diego Zoo, there is a double decker bus to bring you around the place. However, it is nicer to take a walk in the early morning and take the bus in the afternoon. Buy the bottomless drinks which is refillable the whole day. This serves as double purpose. It serves as souvenir too. I brought them home here in the Philipppines.

Dont ever miss the last American exit at San Ysidro. There is an outlet store there. It is the best shopping center in San Diego.

Did you know that the Coronado bridge is one of the tallest in the world? It gives a spectacular view of the place. Definitely, Hotel Coronado is one of the best not only in the USA but also in the world. If is one of the most expensive. However, you can just walk in over in the place and see its beauty.

The Balboa Park is a must. See its website to determine which places you want to go.
See yahoo travel, then go to travel guides and go under San Diego. There is a slideshow of the palces to see in San Diego and they have the top 10 popular attractions at the left lower portion of the page. They have the websites, locations, schedules of the said places.

Oceanside and Harbor View are definitely places to see.

Carlsbad is also a place to see. It is where Legoland is located. There are strawberry farms there depending on the season. You can pick strawberries in some farms.

I advice that you buy maps and search the internet before your trip. See also the places where the trolley stops and what you expect to see in these stations. Make a schedule and plan your trip well. Alot a day for San Diego Zoo and Sea World.

Yes, Tijuana can be done very safely if you restrict yourself to the standard tourist route... That is, drive (or take public transport) to the boarder. Last exit on right (before border) has a parking lot with a bunch of buses. Buses run every 20 minutes and only cost about $5 round trip. They take you to a bus teminal downtown Tijuana, on the main tourist drag (Revoulcion Blvd). Stroll up and down Revolucion Blvd for a few hours, take in a lunch, a Hai Jai game maybe, then bus home. You will be perfectly safe.

Do not try and drive yourself.

Best advice for visiting Tijuana - be careful not to get off the beaten track, don't try to go native, don't try to buy dope, and most important of all, don't get stoned or drunk. There are too many American & Canadian tourists who have broken these common sense rules and regreted it. They are the lucky ones as too many others have ended up missing or dead. This has happened very recently too.

Unfortunately, this goes for all the more popular Mexican resorts (including Cancun and Acapulco) as well. Speaking from experience, be VERY careful when visiting anywhere in Mexico.

No Americans have been killed in TJ, but it has deteriorated and it is not that interesting in the best of circumstances. Your biggest risk is GI distress, but why not just skip it?
