If I have some of my stock shares certificated what exactly will that mean? What will I be able to do with them? Thanks

It depends on what company you have. You can go to finance.yahoo.com and enter a symbol look up to see the ticker symbol. The ticker is what is used to identify the company to prospective buyers of the company. For example. Coca - Cola's ticker is KO. Home Depot is HD. Once you see what you have and decide if you want to keep the stock or sell it, or perhaps buy something else, you need to transfer the certificates to a broker and allow them to hold the certificate.

I would recommend going with an online broker as you don't need thrills and frills. TDAmeritrade.com, Etrade.com or scotttrade.com would be key brokerages that offer low cost trades (less than $10). At which point you can liquidate your shares, or let them sit in your new account and grow in value and collect dividends if the company you own pays them.
