Yes, they most certainly will attack other fish. They are quite aggressive when they get a bit of size on them.

Even though the Chinese Algae Eater is commonly sold in pet shops, we do not sell the fish because of the aggressive nature. This fish is not that great at removing algae, and because it preys on fish, causes stress and the fish die from being eaten by the algae eater or the stress of the algae eater bothering them. The Chinese Algae Eater can reach at least 5" long. You will find that if overfeeding and over lighting are prevented, algae can be kept at bay. Goldfish love to eat live plants. Some recommendations are anacharis and horn wort. Both are excellent oxygenators and great at removing nitrites from the water. Algae grows excessive when there is too much light and food present. Have fun with your fish.

I have two Chinese Algae Eaters with several other fish. The larger algae eater always chases the the small one. They have never tried to touch the other fish in the tank. Algae eaters like to come out at night, while everybody is sleeping. That is when they like to eat. They make special food for algae eaters.

I had heard from others that they are not good for a peaceful community tank and just did a search on them. This message board has several comments posted by their members regarding the CAE.

Some say they are misunderstood and others haven't a clue about the uproar over them. But the majority claimed, as they grow and age they become very active and destructive, also attacking other tank mates.

Personally, I recommend a good 20 to 40 percent water change, cleaning tank glass, decorations and plants. Then do it again in 3 or 4 days and see how it's going.

In a word - YES! Chinese algae eaters only eat algae as juveniles - as adults they eat the slime coat off the other fish in the tank and damage the scales, leaving them open to infections: http://www.fishlore.com/profile-chinesealgaeeater.htm

Also, they shouldn't be given the chance to - Chinese algae eaters are tropical fish and need a water temperature of 75-80o. Goldfish are cold water fish (65-75o) and should not be kept with tropicals. http://thegab.org/Articles/GoldfishBasics.html

Yes, all sucker fish are omnivores and would love the chance to eat a tstey goldfish. Goldfish have extra thick slime coats on their scales that are very tempting to other fish. Algae eaters also love to eat gouramis and larger cichlids.
