There is a logic behind the QWERTY keyboard. The first typewriters were arranged alphabetically. This put some commonly used letter pairs (ab, gh, st, etc.) too close together and the keys often got stuck. (You have to picture and OLD manual typewriter to see the problem.) Anyway, the typist had to unstick the letters by hand. This not only slowed the typist down but often smudged the paper.
The letters were separated into the current setup splitting up the letter pairs and even moving several to different hands. This was in the 1860s. That has stayed with us as the common English language keyboard ever since.

Actually, many people not know the truth behind this. When the first keyboard was designed it was this man and his typist girlfriend. Well, they were celebrating with a little wine as to the money they were going to make off this. Well, they were feeling quite frisky on the wine and decided to take a "Love" break. In all this commotion of fun and money signs dancing around in their minds, they got the keys all messed up. Some say it was from seeing double. Anyway, they did not notice the keys were totally out of order. When they presented the first typewriter to their investors the question arose as to why the keys were all out of order. The women, having recovered from her hangover, thought quickly. She told the investors that her man realized she typed too fast and the mechanical keys would hang on each other, so, they designed a random key layout to prevent jamming keys. Well, everyone believed this and that what is still believed today. But, off the record and just between all us here on answers........................... It was the Wine.

there was a lot of thinking put into creating a keyboard.....the keys could have been arranged in the alphabetical order(which some new users think should have been done) but this would have made difficult for our fingers.....the keys are arranged in such a way that all keys are in a particular diatance which is user friendly and makes it easy to use

The original typewriter keyboard was set up to slow the typists down. If they typed too fast, the keys got tangled up with each other. Everybody that uses English for their typing learns the same system, so it got transferred to computer keyboards.

actually they were placed so because typist had gotten so fast that the keys were becoming jammed were the most popular letters were placed near each other, QWERTY design was done so that the most popular letters were placed evenly on both sides of the key board and on different levels to even out the popular keys among the least popular and seperate them from each other

They are done that way on purpose. That one that we use today is usually the dvorak keyboard. they found out that people type faster with this method of keyboard. It's easier on your fingers, don't have to stretch as far. And it is easier to learn .

It is because of typewriters.
And yes, there is some logic behind it, I just suck at trying to explain it. So I have a link I found that can do it better than I can.
