I think it was dealing with the political unrest at the time, and it's somewhat bittersweet and sarcastic of the american dream verses the turmoil with the cultural movements and the vetnam war.

American Pie is an eight-and-a-half minute long classic rock song by singer-songwriter Don McLean about "the day the music died."The song's lyrics are the subject of much debate. Although McLean dedicated the American Pie album to Buddy Holly, none of the singers in the plane crash are identified by name in the song itself.

Don Mclean stated that he never meant for the song to mean anything but if you want to read other peoples opinion there are many websites devoted to it.

as some said it doesn't maybe mean anything specific. But I did see Don talking about it once and he was talking about that alot of great bands had broke up around that time and it was kinda about that.
