Ok so you said "damn religious right" and "affected with a ghastly and nasty disease of lack of principle". So are you saying it is the religious right who have no principles? That's a Christian hater thing to say. If you prefer atheist democrats then vote for them, nobody is stopping you. Too bad you didn't specify as to exactly what the evil religious people have done to tick you off so much, but I think if the conservative party as a whole moves away from from Christian values they would lose way more support than they would gain.

If you WERE a Republican, why would you vote for Democrats? What defined a Republican was less government and lower taxes; do you somehow believe that the Democrats will deliver this?
What good does it do you and the country to vote for the antithesis of what you believe, if you believed in the party of Lincoln?
Besides, the better route would be to vote Libertarian. And only an idiot would think that the current Democratic Party with its gang of Socialists in the making is even close to what the GOP was before the rise of the Religious Right. The old GOP was a very libertarian group, a concept most Democrats don't have a clue about.

Your not a Republican, so don't go there. The religious right is no worse off than the liberal left. Both extreme ends do nothing for their parties and enhance the divide that has grown in America over the last 20 years. People need to really get a clue. How many people here know who is on their school board, local town counsel, or district? Probably less than 25% know their local reps. The local reps are raising the property taxes, school taxes, and other taxes that affect everyday life. Once these government officials get past the local government level, it is all about money and power, and how to keep it. Both parties are motivated by the same principals, get in and do whatever to stay in. They could really careless about you and me. But, america is still the best country on this planet.

The religious right consists of pro-family conservatives and are NOT America's enemies. The leaders of that contingent are the problem. They need to put their religion in perspective that it is their personal choice and get back to supporting the core beliefs of conservatism which is smaller government and lower taxes.
Democrats support abortion on demand, which is murder of the most vulnerable and unrepresented of human beings; and more taxes to fund bs like NPR and PBS and other socialist programs.
In a nutshell, voting for Democrats makes you a Democrat. The alternative would be a conservative libertarian. The main problem with the Libertarian Party is that it consists of liberals and conservatives and one must choose carefully.
However, there are distinct differences between the GOP and the Donkey Party and it is up to the party faithful to remind the party leaders of those differences.

When hell freezes over.
Part of the reason the Republican Party has stayed alive and active IS the religious right.
Honestly, some people don't know anything when it comes to the Republican Party.

They'll come around after they lose the 2008 elections.
I'm a liberal Democrat (proud to be from the "Land of Lincoln"), and I'd like to quote from a 1981 speech by Barry Goldwater.
"...for 205 years this nation, based on those principles, has endured. Through foreign wars and civil wars, through political scandals and economic disasters, through civil disorders and Presidential assassinations, our flag has flown high. Through it we've survived every possible attack on our freedom.
"But another force could succeed in dividing our country. The specter of single-issue religious groups is growing over our land.
..."The religious factions tat are growing in our land are not using their clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent.
..."I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across the country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are?and from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?
..."I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'"
