The "Firearm Free Zone" law, bans all dangerous weapons and firearms within 1000 feet of a school campus. But what if you live far within 1000 feet of a school campus, does this law exclude private residences?

If you're referring to the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990, that was overturned as un-constitutional, by the US Supreme Court. Although, I'm told there was a replacement. Assuming the language is the same, or similar, there are exceptions for private possession on private property that is not part of school property.

There is also an exception for people with a CCW permit issued by the same state that the school is in.

If a firearm is used in a crime within the 1000 feet radius, it does not matter if it was in a private residence. If you are traveling with a firearm legally from or to a residence within the zone , then there is nothing to worry about.
