no it's not to young, especially if it's an add a line on a family talk plan or something like that, i gave my sister one of my lines, she is 10, very mature for her age, hasnt lost it yet or went over her allotted minutes, i just make sure to talk to her about it all the time to make sure she's using it correctly.

Personally, 12 years old is not too young to have a cell phone. Though I am only 16 years old I have a younger brother (age 11) who has a cell phone. We have T-Mobile service and he is on a plan with me, my uncle, and mother. T-Mobile offers "KidConnect" where if you or someone you know has a T-Mobile account, you can add a child to the plan for $9.99 a month. It has free weekends and I believe he gets like 200 anytime minutes. He is active in sports, has to ride the bus to and from school and keeps in touch with friends and that is a very easy way for all of us to stay "in touch" with each other. With all kinds of activities going on where me or my mom are present, that phone keeps us notified in case something happens so I suggest that you look into it!!!

i am getting my 11 year old son a cell phone as part of his xmas gift. i will buy him a cricket phone that has unlimited local calls and texting. (so he wont go over) I do have a good reason for doing this though. I work for a company that specializes in emergency phones and more and more we have noticed that the phone companies are pulling payphones. Florida, Texas, Georgia and Tennessee to name a few of the states that are doing this, so alot of properties are getting rid of them. Bellsouth is almost done pulling all of thiers. I want to make sure my son can contact me if he needs to. There are some payphone companies out there, but they charge a high monthly fee and won't give the property any revenue (or if they do it's small) Now if he abuses the phone or his grades go down it will get taken away. in todays day and age, electronics are coming out more and more. no sooner you buy one version of a video system, they come out with a newer "improved" version. it's ridiculous. But since he can't access a payphone at the local mall, movie house, school, park or just about anywhere. I want to give him a phone so there's no excuse. it's up to the parent, but i'm from NY and being down south things are further apart. So communication is good. (plus new ones have built in GPS, in case a child is kidnapped, you can locate them, think of it as a lojack for kids..LOL) again, this is only my opinion, and we are all entitled to one. good luck with your decision

the reason why people need cell phones is to make emergency phone calls that they can't make from building.
if you want to get a phone just to talk to your friends all the time, theres no point in having a cell phone. i think its just a fashion statement for younger kids to have them.
i got one when i turned 16 because thats when i started driving, and i needed one incase i got into an accident. i think that everyone who drives should have a cell phone just incase of emergencies.
plus, a lot of my friends have to pay for their own bills. if you really want to work that much harder just to pay a bill so that you can hold a cell phone in your hand, thats fine, but i think its pointless. you can just call your friends over the home phone line. if your parents pay for your bill, then its just being spoiled to get one for no real reason. my parents spoil me sometimes, but everytime i catch them doing it, i have to know better than to let it happen, so i have to put my foot down.
i think a lot of other people need to start realizing this too. if you dont need it, dont have your parents get it for you just becasue they can and they will.

No, that's not too young. Heck, I had a near top of the line phone when I was 12. Just so you know, that was the Kyocera KX5B.
