He was from Virginia, from a wealthy family of planters. VERY well educated, first in private schools and then at William and Mary. When his father died he inherited a lot of land and slaves. He was actively anti-slavery for much of his life, but would have had to get out of debt in order to free his slaves (kind of like not being able to sell a house with two mortgages on it--they were considered property) and so never did, although he proposed a lot of abolitionist laws and passed a few minor ones. He wrote the Declaration of Independence, served with the House of Burgesses in Virginia, was John Adams' vice president, and then became the nation's third president. He was very much in favor of the separation of church and state, and even wrote the "Jeffersonian Bible" which is basically the Bible with anything that could been seen as magic or miraculous (like the resurrection) edited out. He was happily married when he was young, but she died. He seems to have then had a lifelong affair with his late wife's half sister, Sally Hemings, who was a slave. Some of their children were sold when he died. The Jefferson family denied the affair *and* the slave children for generations, but a decade or so ago, a DNA test proved that the slaves' stories were far more likely. Anything else?

OH, and he died on the same day as John Adams, 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

When he listed his greatest accomplishments of his life, he did not include being President of the United States.
