what should the fine be for this violation on a first time offense? I feel my fine is excessive

I bet you looked at the answer above and thought, "Hey, my fine is a lot higher than that." Yep. To the fine are added all sorts of penalty assessments used for court construction, night court, etc., etc. That brings the total forfeitable bail on a $150 fine up to $570 (as shown in the state-wide schedule linked below), which I bet is what you are being charged. Unfortunately, as the prior post noted, $150 is the minimum fine, as found in Vehicle Code section 22454.5, so you won't be able to ask the judge to set it any lower.

You can go to traffic school. It costs a bit more but will keep it off your record for DMV points and insurance purposes.

You should take a look at California Vehicle Code Section 22454.5. The penalty for a first offense if $150-$250 and $500-$1000 for a second offense. More offenses could result in a license suspension.
