pentium 4 1.7 to 2 Ghz with atleast 512mb of RAM, video card with 128 memory and atleast 80gig of hard drive for windows xp should be fine. you dont need high end computer specs if you do just internet and office.

It depends on how much money you are willing to spend. If not alot, I would suggest a Walmart special, and then buy a copy of MS Office online from Google or some other site. If you have a little a more, you can look for a decent model at Best Buy. I don't like coupon rebates that I have to turn in to get money back. It should be done when you buy the computer. Tiger Direct has some pretty good computers online too, and I've never had any problems with them.

well dell desktops are great to have but they are kind of expensive. so on my opinion it would be hp cause its just a computer for everyday needs and not for gaming or anything other than internet and microsoft office. if you want the link here it is : http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/series_can.do?storeName=computer_store&landing=desktops&a1=Usage&v1=Everyday%20computing
lol its a long link but sorry i just copied it off the address bar hehe. im not sure if you can take the monitor and the printer off the deal but if you can, try it cause they let you customize your computer. if you want to customize your computer, i recommend dell : http://www.dell.com
good luck :)

Branded computer is of course better than clone but the disadvantage of branded is when one of its hardware having a problem it is hard to find a replacement or sometimes very expensive.
And if you're planning to use pirated software sometimes branded computer is having problem with that.
Microsoft Vista is already launched so i suggest to you to buy a dual processor computer.

Well since your on a budget. I would go emachines or systemax. They make cheap towers. Can't believe I just recommended those computers. But they are cheap and will do for your college years.

Yes, Avoid Microsoft, unless you want to just sign your paycheck over to them, which is what you will need to do. Or, I heard that Microsoft is making it more convenient to give them money. Just have your entire paycheck made out to them, and they will, if they think it is necessary, send you part of it back. Better yet, just get Kubuntu, at www.kubuntu.org, and get rid of all of Microsofts problems, such as the 114, ooo virii that attack Microsoft that Kubuntu is immune to.

Dells and HPs are great for cheap computers.
www.retailmenot.com usually has good coupons for online retailers so you can check those out
