In an ideal world, race wouldn't matter. Neither would gender, colour, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. We're a long way from that Utopia.
You're going to find racism everywhere, not just in America. Even here in Canada, where most people would like to pretend it doesn't exist, it's prevalent enough that the government has instituted a 'Stop Racism' campaign, and named March 21 as 'racism awareness' day.

Define American!
Most foreigners who come through legally are American. They have pride in our freedoms and cultures, their kids only one generation of difference are just like the rest of our kids, less the fact that they are more likely bilingual. The only issue is that those you are not white, and are VERY new to this country keep their heads down. Most do not understand how hard it is at time to come to America. However, after a decade in this country, with the right job, and social environment you would not even be able to tell if someone was not originally American. Unfortunately, racism exists in American, but it is not the racism that most recall from Text books, or the United States history. It exists in the actions of people. When ever you look at a person of color and assume that they are going to do something wrong, or look your car doors obviously when you see someone darker than you walking by your car in the parking lot, only because it is parked next to yours. These are the things that are dealt with everyday for our brothers and sisters. I have looked a few doors on a count that a person seemed suspicious, and that is one thing, but you must use your intellect and instinct to determine those that are good from those who are not.
There is no possible way to assume that race is a limiting factor, but favoritism plays a huge role. There are many competant foreigners that come here with degrees from other countries that become void once they come to the US. They work hard in our schools to reach their status again, and after 10+years of amazing work, they are regarded as inferior workers specifically because they do not have connections. If I had one EAST/WEST/SOUTH African Doctor who studied in INDIA and placed his in skill contrast with and HARVARD MEDICAL graduate, the Indian trained African would blow the American out of the water with knowledge and capability. We all know who will get paid more, and who will brag about his new car, and who will be less likely to do the right thing, but that is not the issue. Why the hell are we promoting someone who is going to produce less? Is it because he is not white, or that his skills are unknown. Lets think about this one. They both work at the same place, they both perscribe medication, and stay up to date with the most recent medical advancements. Yet, the not white person gets the promotion.
Perhaps AFRICANS HAVE POOR SOCIAL SKILLS.
If I needed heart surgery, I would want the guy that everyone could count on, not the guy that sounded smooth.

If you were born here, or you immigrated here you are an American that's what's beautiful about the country. Why do people ask this question as if whites who have European ancestry were natives of this country. Hello they're technically native to Europe, and anyone else who is here who isn't Native American has roots somewhere else. So as long as you were born here or you're a citizen you're just as American as anyone else. But I think the real deciders should be Native Americans since we all kind of came to their turf and took over.

If you think that because the color of your skin or your place of birth is somewhat different than the average people, then you yourself are discriminating against your own self. Most people that feel discriminated against is due to an inferiority complex. Those people who are constantly thinking that other races are inferior to them also have an inferiority complex. We are not these bodies, we are the spirit soul within the body.
