It's probably saying something along the lines of This isn't as fast as it can be, etc. And then you see something that says USB 2.0. This means that the USB cable you are currently using is 1.x which is a lot slower than 2.0. USB 2.0 is newer than 1.x and WILL get you faster speeds.

You just have to make sure your computer has USB 2.0 ports

Sounds like your computer's USB ports are the OLD Version1.1 and it's telling you the new drive will go faster *IF* you had the USB Version 2.0 ports

Here's a link to a PCI slot 5 Port USB Version 2.0 card

What you most probably have the external writer plugged into is USB 1.0 or 1.1 port with a maximum data transfer rate of 12Mb per second, whereas USB 2.0 has a data transfer rate of 480 Mb per second.
If your motherboard supports USB 2.0 it would be wise to install the drivers to speed them up, or install a PCI card with additional USB ports that are 2.0 speed.

its telling you that the usb port you have is "com 1" which works at a slow speed. if you had a newer computer with a "com 2" port you would see a huge difference in speed

Just an addition here, but I own an external HD, and sometimes I misplace the newer / nicer cable that the drive came with, and am forced to us a dollar store cable. The scab cable is noticeably slower. Food for thought...
