I was given an upright piano today that is at least 40 yrs old. Looks like solid Rosewood and the finish is stunning in places. Old owner smoked so it has that sticky film on it and in places has thick buildup of "hand grime". What will get the grime off and leave the finish under it? Any special precautions because it is a Piano? I have never owned one before so all tips to it's care will be appreciated!! Thanks.

Try Murphy's Oil soap with very hot water. It should take the film off and enhance the stain below.

stay away from harsh abrasives.

Murphy's oil soap is an excellent wood cleaner. You might also try something with a little citrus in it, to help cut the grime.

A tip on the future care... don't use furniture polish. Just lightly dust the piano with a damp cloth, as often as necessary. Ive seen a lot of beautiful pianos get buried underneath a build-up of wax. ;)

Also, the piano will stay in tune longer, if you do not place it against an outside wall (less temperature variation). If it sounds a bit too loud, or 'echoes', you can hang a quilt, or heavy blanket on the backside.

Enjoy your piano :)

Murphy's Oil Soap is an excellent suggestion. Don't use an abrasive applicator. Use a soft Cotton rag/towel, and substitute elbow grease for abrasives!

Once you get it clean, you need to hand rub it with a good furniture oil. Don't use commercial products, like Pledge, as mentioned. Buy a good quality finishing oil, like tung oil or Fromby's, rub on a coat with a clean, soft cloth, then buff it with a nother clean, soft cloth.
