Christians don't beat Nuns for not covering their faces. Muslims do. Recently in Saudi Arabia a school for girls burned. Some of the girls ran out of the burning school without taking the time to grab their face covers. The Saudi Muslim religious police made them go back inside to get their face coverings. The girls died.
Evidently muslims would rather see girls dead in a smoking pile of debris than see their faces.
I call that oppression.
Wake up and smell the jihad...

Well, Ireland's been pretty oppressed, but nuns here don't cover up in public. If they choose to go about in public. Some choose not to speak to anyone, to stay indoors. Some drive around & wear ordinary clothes and sandals, and why not?

Priests go around wearing a white collar. They are surprised and insulted if someone uses bad language, but you cannot have it both ways!

It's kind of difficult for autistic friends to come to terms with the fact that they are not allowed to live like that because they don't (or can't be) a nun!

My understanding is that Nun's agreed to their life of chastity, obedience, and poverty ... Should the Nun choose to become a layperson, she can do so with approval (from Bishops), and without her life being taken (killed)

While I believe (could be wrong here) that many Muslim woman are required (by penalty of death) to wear the habit. This is where many Western women feel sorry for the Muslim women (that & female circumcision). In modern places like Istambul, the younger generation is wearing long sleve shirts, buttoned up to the collar & pant's/ long skirts. They look modern, and it's admirable when they get to CHOOSE to wear the habit. Another difference is many are married and enjoy sex, probably obedience is big (same), and well, many Muslim women are mega rich.

That is an excellent question. I think it comes down to the better then thou attitude some Christians can have. Even though the Bible is very plain on how we should live and we should not be judgemental many Christians tend to over look this. These kind of Christians are the people that give us bad names. Some religions can really mess us up. I for one am a Christian. I am not religious. We as Christians do not understand a woman covering herself up be it a Muslim woman or a Catholic woman. We fear what we do not understand. We tend to condemn what we fear.

I believe the perception in the non-Muslim world is that female Muslims are not as naturally willing to wear veils as female Catholics who choose to be nuns. If a female Catholic wants to be a lay person instead of a nun, she isn't punished by her local government for not wearing a head covering. Perhaps if you compared the female Amish to female Muslims on this question it would yield the answers your looking for.

The problem isn't their religion..if it's their belief and they choose it, it's fine (for both). They feel it's respectful to God..and that's great. How it's different...there is no political state that mandates young women to become nuns, while there are some Islamic states that enforce strict religious rules on the entire population. People have a problem with the lack of religious freedom. They feel people should be free not only to choose their religion, but also to express it however they see fit (With or without Burka)

1. It's the 21st century
2. The Hollywood stereotyped image of a nun - actually doesn't exist anymore. Things have changed. When I worked at a Catholic private school in Maryland I saw that the nuns there dressed no differently from the rest of us.

And now a few words from the Atheist in the third row. Wear what ever You feel comfortable in. A Nun's Habit is Her official uniform. Yes they do wear jeans and 'T' shirts at home. If You want to display Your preferred beliefs in public then who the hell am I to try to stop You? Don't ever let other people's religious constraints and hang ups prevent You from being the person that You really are!
