One problem is that the exchange rate with the British pound is not favorable. One tip is that the museums are all free. So is window shopping at Harrods or Hambley toy store. I would recommend the museums. Avoid the Tower as that is extremely expensive. A "tower lite" that has crown jewels, etc. is the Queens museum at Buckingham palace. Although not free it is much less expensive. Westminster Abbey is a must see, especially if you're curious to see Newton's tomb after watching the Da Vinci code.

St Pauls cathedral is not free, except that you can watch a Sunday service from the back for free.

As for the museums, my order of preference are: Tate Modern, National Gallery, British museum, Natural History museum, Victoria and Albert museum, National portrait gallery, Tate Britain, and the Science museum.

Take a bus tour (about an hour) of the whole city and then decide which places you want to spend more time in. There are even some tour buses where you can hop on and off to see the different sights. There are so many great places to see that you really have to decide for yourself. It might help for you to look at a tour book such as Fodor's before you go so you can start thinking about what you would like to see.

If you're not going to be there for long, take one of the double-decker bus tours-you get to see a lot that way.
Try staying at dorms at a college campus-we stayed at one outside Hyde park. Not fancy, but wayyy less expensive than a nice hotel, and still safe and conveniently located.
