If she doesn't want to breed with him, he will rough her up/possibly kill her.
If for some reason they do breed, you'll have to watch them carefully and then take the female away because she will eat the eggs.
Just so you know, he doesn't need a companion. He's happy when he's getting attention from you or your mom.

I have bred Betta before. DO NOT put them together. Breding them is a long process.
First they need to be in two different bowls (or whatever you use), and you put them beside eachother. When THEY are ready to mate, the male will make a bubble nest. The female will fill up with eggs and will have lines going down her sides. Then you may put the female in with the male.
The male will then squeeze her to get the guys out in a "embrace" of sorts. He will do his thing then. He will then gather the falling eggs into his mouth and put them into the bubble nest and go back to the female for more.
Depending on the fish, they can work together but most times its wise to remove the female right away after the "mating" has been done and the male will take care of the rest.
Once the eggs have hatched you have to remove the male. Its wise to have a bredding tank that you put the male in for him to make the nest in and move him back to his own bowl when the eggs of hatched.
There is a lot more thing invovled with taking care of the eggs and fry but your not asking about bredding your asking about weather they can be put in the same bowl. So the answer would be no, its not wise to do so.

listen to magic man on this one. breeding can be complicated and if not done right they will kill each other. a one gallon bowl does not even come close to a proper breeding tank for bettas.
the reasoning behind this is because females only find males when they want to mate, if they aren't interested in eachother when he chases her she can just swim away. however in a tank she has no where to go and they will just tear each other to shreds.
also, a 1 gallon tank is barely enough room for 1 betta and would never be able to support 2.
if your mom wants multiple bettas tell her to get a 10gallon and 5 or 6 female bettas. they can be housed together in groups of 3 or more.

You are getting loads of really bad advice. A male betta will attack a female betta unless they are both in breeding condition and ready to spawn. Even if they are, right after they breed the male will attack her to protect the nest of eggs.
You're fist impression was exactly right, he most certainly will kill her within a few days at the most. Here's a link to a page talking about bettas. Near the bottom they talk about keepin a male and female together. Kepp in mind this site is from the California Betta Society, a huge group of people that keep and breed bettas. They really know what they are talking about!

Hope this help!

certain, you are able to placed a male and woman betta fish mutually! I actually have 4 betta fish at domicile, and that i placed my male and woman mutually and it grow to be effective. except i noticed a small decrease on my women folk fin. I nonetheless have them mutually and that is doing effective. besides the undeniable fact that that is possibly more beneficial advantageous to no longer attempt it even besides the undeniable fact that I did it. in case you do placed a male and woman mutually, that is solid that you position them in a 5 - 6 gallon tank and some vegetation for hiding spots. not in any respect placed a male betta with yet another male besides the undeniable fact that they are going to kill one yet another!

Two fish enter, one fish leave.
Bettas don't pal around in nature. They only tolerate each other during the window of time when they mate. They have a fairly low chance of co-existing in any long term situation in a 1 gal bowl.

NO NO NO!!! HE will kill her, or she'll kill him. Bettas dont mix with each other. Even when you bred them you have to watch they dont beat the crap out of each other! When they bred they only stay in with each other for maybe 5 mins or less! Please Please dont get a female betta and put them together!

A male betta will generally only attack another male betta, they should be fine together.

yes they should be fine. otherwise they wouldnt be able to multiply and the bettas would all die out...but it doesnt really need a companion...fish are solitary creatures. good luck.
