I understand how to do the rib knitting in theory. knit 2 purl 2 repeat, I am doing this but ending up with all of thes extra undecipherable loops on my needle. Please tell me what I am doing wrong- I cast on 14 stitches did one row of knit 2 purl 2 knit 2 . . . and end up with a mess that I have not got a clue what to do with- is there a site that has a video or really concise instructions on how I should be doing this??

You have to bring the wrapping yarn to the front (between the needles) when you purl and then put the yarn in the back when you knit.

I just went and looked...go to this page and click on the ribbing video (blue box not pink box) and watch. It's very good.

Yes, it sounds as if you brought your yarn over your needles as you moved it to the front to purl and then back to knit. This creates all kinds of extra stitches. Think of your needle tips as a drawbridge and your yarn as a ship. For the ship to get from one side of the bridge to the other it cannot jump over the bridge, it must wait for the bridge to open and sail through the two sides of it. In the same way your yarn must travel between the tips of the needles rather than jumping over them to go from back to front and front to back again. Count your stitches at the end of each row until you get the hang of it. If you end up with more than 14 stitches at the end of a row, look back along the knitting carefully till you see where you went over the needles, when you work back to this loop, simply drop it from your needle--it won't ravel, there's nothing below it that will drop. You will have extra yarn in that area so your gauge will be off, but use this piece to practice on until you get the hang of it. Save this swatch and put it in a binder so that you will have a record of your progress.

there are lots of great sites that not only give you ideas, and patterns, but help to guide and teach.
I listed a few.
happy knitting.
you can also try doing a rib in a knit 1, purl1, kint 1 and so on. It doesnt have to be 2, that whay you can get the hang of it.
