If you are going somewhere right away, best to let the engine run for several minutes, or maybe a bit longer, then go. But, if you aren't going anywhere, and your battery is good, then leaving it sit will not hurt anything! However, if the battery is an older one, then i'd say start it, then after a short warm-up, go for a short drive, like 3-4 miles. If you have a battery you're not sure about, a battery trickle charger left on overnight will help keep the battery viable. Just don't forget it's in under the hood, and drive off with it connected to the extension cord, ot whatever!

It is always preferable to let the engine to warm up to the designated operating temperature. You may be told that you are wasting fuel. Just need to keep it at idle and run for 1 - 2 minutes.

Depending on the quality of engine oil used, you may cause more wear and tear if you drive off immediately when engine is still cold and turnoff more than 8 hours ago.

letting a car warm up before driving is important any time of the year, more so when cold. oil has settled to the bottom and is no longer on ventories or moving parts, also oil is thick and needs to thin for propper lubrication. oil warmmers can help alot too to thin oil before vehical is started. however coolant heaters with a fan drive do this better by heating entire block. rings and bearing, crank, cam, lifters, rods, and rocker arms all wear out quick if warm up is not done. It can mean the difference of getting two times or more of the engines life before breaking down. transmission is also effected too in pretty well the same way.

Just give it time to get the oil circulating. Say 10-15 secs. Then try and drive easy for the first couple of miles. This gives the parts a chance to expand and warm up a little. I try and keep my RPM low for the first few miles, and then it's back to normal.

let it run at idle! it is important you do this especially in the winter. You want your car to warm up properly b/c it allows your oil to reach a proper operating temp, plus it also allows the different metals in your engine to expand properly.
when oil is cold (bellow 40 deg. F) is is congealed and not flowing properly

You'll put unnecc stress/wear on your engine- not so much for new cars provided you take it easy driving the time it takes for your engine to warm up. Make sure you get it regularly serviced.

IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU WAS TO PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NUETRAL WITH PARKING BRAKE ENGAGE AND LET IT HEAT UP TO REGULAR TEMP B4 TAKING OFF.
ENGINES PERFORM BETTER ONCE ITS REACHED IT REG, TEMP AND IT HAS MORE POWER.
