when they first started making movies they used to have a cable hooked to the back of some one that was shot in a movie and when the gun would go off they would pull real hard, and the person would look like they were really knocked for a loop.
However I have shot a lot of deer and I use a very heavy bullet (180 gr. 30-06) and I have never knocked one several feet to the side. Even if you hit bone it is going to go through, so my experience says you are right.
Edit note; I failed to mention I never saw a guy in combat get knocked back either.

Newton's Third Law of Motion declares that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
If the .50 cal magnum knocked you back 5 feet when you fired it, then it would knock the target back 5 feet when it was hit (subject to some variables, such as whether or not the target absorbed the impact or if it passed through).
An animate target hit by a projectile often exhibits some movement, and this is sometimes misinterpreted as kinetic reaction to the hit of the projectile. This is almost never the case.

5 feet is exugurrated.
they would have an exit wound the size of a damn watermelon and would fly back about a foot as they fall from the force of the round. but the only way i can see you flying back more than a foot tops is if your shot with a cannon or maybe step on a mine and your chunks are sent into the air and happen to land 5 feet away

As per Newton's third law, the person hit with the bullet will only be struck with as much force as was exerted on the gun. Basically, the person who got shot could only be thrown backward five feet if the shooter was too, and this doesn't happen.

Getting shot by anything is like getting kicked by a horse. 50 cal even more so. While I've never been shot by a 50, I'd wager it could throw you back quite a bit.
