I have already checked my system settings to make sure that my optical cable was selected and I have all supported audio formats checked.

Ok, the answer above me is just not true. If it were, people would have returned them all to Sony. Duh.

Moving on, my guess is that you could have a problem with your speaker set up. Something like this happened to me last month and it turned out that I had switched my front and rear hookups accidentally.

Before you decide for sure that there's something wrong with the PS3, check it with someone else's setup and check your setup with another DVD player.

go to the auto setting on the ps3 and i think you go to 5.1 output

Because PS3s never work correctly.
