We have all tried for over a year to help, but to no avail. In the past several months we have tried the "Tough Love" approach and now there's a lot of guilt.I have been asked to give his eulogy, and although I have written alot of my own words and feelings,I would very much love to find perhaps a fitting poem. Please any help would be greatly appreciate.Thanks.

I am sorry for your loss. Hope this helps.

God saw you were getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So he put his arms around you
And whispered, "Come to me"
With tearful eyes we watched you,
And saw you passing away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

No matter what everyone says about "Tough Love" it doesn't work for every situation and every person. Sometimes, you just have to "love..love...love..without the toughness, and seek professional help....and even then there are no guarantees. In any case, my sympathies go out for you and your family, it's so sad to have to go through something like this. Maybe your personal words would be better than a poem. Remember his good qualities, and the good times and focus on that, and not the difficulties preceding his death. I don't know if you or your family believe in God and the afterlife, but it's comforting to know that they have just moved on to another dimension, a better one. He will also be with you all in your hearts and minds. There is no need in feeling guilty when everyone tried there very best, and I'm sure he realizes this, even now. Sometimes even our best, just isn't good enough because some things are out of our control. God Bless...

I'm so sorry.

hopefully you'll keep this question open so many of us can come back to help you out with this....and to edit our answers as things come to mind.

You did what you felt would work...not to hurt him, but to help him.
You can't be blamed for that.

But it's never too late to become educated in helping others to help themselves.

Maybe you can still do something for your nephew....
or in your nephew's honor.
Maybe you can help save at least one of his friends or another family member who is addicted.
All you need to do is be compassionate and understanding.
And keep your eyes open.
You may just get to them when you recite your thoughtfully written eulogy..

If you reach out and give them a hug with the words you choose.
Find just the right words that would make them glad they came.
God will give you the words. They may be formed here or in your head,
but you will choose the best ones with God's help, IF you are tuned in to him.

I'm not sure how comfortable you are with the bible, but there are some pretty thoughtful words in there to choose from.
And the best part about it, is that there are no copy-rights on those words.
They were meant to be shared with other people.

Don't know of any poems for you sorry.

You state you and your family tried everything. You did your best, but he didn't want the help. Don't feel guilty about his death. It's not your fault. You held out your hand and he didn't take it.

As for the eulogy, think of the good things that he did. The pleasant times the family had with him before the 'problems' set in. Just speak from your heart and you will find the right words.

Sorry for you loss.....

First of all, I'm sooooo sorry.

Second, I'm 99% sure A. E. Housman's "To An Athlete Dying Young" would be insensitive and inappropriate, but on the off 1% chance I'm wrong you should look it up anyway.

Third, you may do better with song lyrics than actual poems. Drugs are much better covered in songs than in poetry, on the whole.

Honey, this is very sad, and is not your fault. You and your family should be happy and pleased that you guys tried everything in your power to help him. I also suggest, you and your family receive some temporary counseling. And please, when remembering the nephew, try to remember sweet and pleasant things about him because that will help heal the pain. I am very sorry for your loss. Hope this helps, good luck.

I'm so sorry, that must be so tough.
Well, I have a poem. Probably one you won't use but at least you can read it

Dreamer
'A fool you are' she said
'Weaving dreams of blue deceiving sky
Evening folds them all
and what are you?
Squanderers of centuries and hours
hold only faded flowers.'

'And why should I,' I answered,
'Walk among the dead?
And you are dead a million years,
The wolves are fed.
A fool who eats the leavings of the wise
Who tells me that he dies?'

Robert Frost wrote this poem, and it is sometimes used in Eulogies.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

God looked down on your body,
So tired from hanging on,
From a life that was overwhelming you,
And wanted back His son.
So he took away the air you breathe,
And gave you what was best,
A place to be at peace,
A final place to rest.

I'm very sorry for you and your family.....
