Yes, see the original movie 'The Day of the JACKAL' to get the full picture, or read the novel by Frederick Forsyth. In the original, the assassin is hired to kill the French President Charles de Gaulle. There really was an assassiantion attempt on de Gaulle.
As for 'The Jackal", there also was a real person - Carlos Ilich Ramirez Sanchez - Carlos the Jackal.

I agree - Day of the Jackal was a damn fine flick. "The Jackal" with Bruce Willis pales in comparison.
