By looking at it? I don't know what fancy equipment you think you might need, other than a chart of moon phases if you really have no clue.

If by "fancy gadgets" you mean "eyeballs" you might be out of luck; otherwise a cloudless sky and a moment or two of spare time work wonders.

Well obviously full and new are easy, and first quarter is easy as well. If you see half a moon, draw a line along the edge . If the lighted side and your straight make a P think primier and it is first quarter.
