i worked for Toyota when the tc came out, and i worked for Mazda when the 3/6s came out.
they are both comperable as far as performance goes, the Mazda offers a "MazdaSpeed" version of the 3 (and i think they do or are going to for the 6) which beefs up the performance and handling characteristics of the vehicle. the Scion has a huge catalog of upgrade parts and accesories from Toyota, there was talk of a Turbo or supercharger option for the tc, but i had quit Toyota before i was able to see it...not sure if it's out yet or not.
as far as practicality goes, the Mazdas would be it. the 3 offers a wagon that looks really sporty and (obviously) more cargo space. the 6 is a bigger car than the 3 and tc all around. both the mazdas are 4 door. the tc is a two door coupe and that sucks if you have a family.
but the sunroof on the tc! three pannel all glass...it's amazing to watch it go.
if i had to pick on...i would go for the 3. good looks, sporty, Mazda reliability, possibility for serious tuning and upgrades.

Mazda 3/6: I didn't get a chance to sample a 4, but the 3.0 liter V6 was very smooth and civilized.
