An obsessive thought.
Being happy is something that you have to pay attention to. If you smile or feel content just for a second, that was and can continue to be happiness. If you just go over and over something you can´t resolve, that is depression. Is like being afraid of taking the next step. Like not wanting to be. Humans have a tendency to get depressed if they don´t get what they want. Depression is an ego trip.

Depression is an overwhelming feeling of misery, normally due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. It makes people either overeat or undereat, sleep a lot or not sleep at all, have no desire to do anything or go anywhere, sometimes not even shower and change clothes. The worst extreme is that severely depressed people can be suicidal.

Extreme sadness that last for a period of two weeks or more. It could include thoughts of suicide, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, crying spells, not enjoying what you used to.

Suffering from depression myself, I define it as a black hole. It just keeps sucking you into it, and you can't get out. It seems endless. It's just like nothingness sometimes.

The best definition I ever heard of came from the Hopeline prevention site :

"The bleakness of the landscape is unimaginable. It is as friendless and alien as a Dali painting. Ordinary concerns, such as work or friends, have no place here. Futility muffles thought; time elongates cruelly." --Kay McKall

Depression is when you have no enthusiasm and no inspiration. You feel lazy. Some people eat more and some people eat less. You don't feel like you CAN do anything. And you don't WANT to do anything. Nothing is special.
I wouldn't say sadness is depression, because sadness is an emotion. When you're depressed, you're pratically emotionless.
The reason they feel suicidal is because they feel there's nothing to live for.
One way to get rid of it is to do something you love. That always makes people happy.
